Lorena Turner

Lorena Turner creates photography projects that draw from the areas of documentary, journalism and fine art. Her work is centered around the idea that the still image is the best medium to communicate and describe aspects of contemporary social and cultural experience, she moves between a large format film camera, DSLR, the iPhone, found vernacular images and cameraless photography (working in the darkroom). Her projects are come from multiple cultural and academic spheres, including sociology, geography, economics, communication, and anthropology, and they depend on aspects of graphic design to shape their appeal.

Lorena's work is shown both nationally and internationally in venues as diverse as The Photographers' Galleryin London, the United Nations headquarters in New York City, TheArc Light Theaterin Hollywood and the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art. Her book first book, The Michael Jacksons, and ethnographic monograph on the American subculture of Michael Jackson impersonators, was published in 2014, and her second book “A Habit of Self Deceit” was published in 2018. 

 Lorena received an MFA from the University of Oregon, studied sociology at The New School for Social Research in New York City, and visual communication in the Communication department at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, California. She also hosts the podcast “New Books in Photography” for the New Books Network.
